I’ve been thinking over the last couple of weeks and days about technology and man. Is AI going to take my job?
Technology was developed by man. We made technology so that it could assist us. Make us more efficient in areas we were inefficient. Now we, humans, are sitting back as if the technology makes the decisions and calls the shots. As if the technology made itself. As if the technology has the right to decide on whether man should even be involved in any processes. I find this quite astonishing. I don’t know if anyone else is observing what I’m observing.
When I talk to the younger generation, they seem to feel wowed by technology. Believing or seeming to believe that AI is so intelligent and technology is going to take over the world. Wait a minute , who made the technology???🤯 Anyway back to the last point. AI being intelligent. Well that’s arguable but in one sense perhaps not, when you think how people are just stepping back. We are letting the technology develop by training it. Whilst, I feel, we unwittingly let our kids’ critical analytical development be stunted by allowing AI to be their first port of call, whenever they are given a problem to solve . I am not saying technology does not have a place in educating our kids but it has to be in a way that is not detrimental to their own development and creativity.

Now why am I having this conversation with myself? I’m not sure anyone else is bothered. I’m having this conversation because I have been watching the leaders that we put our faith and trust in. They have failed to develop policies, processes and regulations that help to manage the incorporation of tech like AI in the work place, in a manner that does not threaten the work life of their worker. I find that the kind of decisions being made astound me. What is wrong with having a policy that looks at technology implementation alongside human beings. Why must one completely substitute the other? Especially in an environment where the human resource is the most abundant. Why are there not more creative and innovative policy makers that look at how the human resource can be implemented in conjunction with appropriate technological advancements used to assist, in areas where the human resource is not as efficient. Why must there be a complete substitution. I do not understand why we’re not thinking in a more symbiotic way.
In manufacturing plants where they’re assembling items it might seem more understandable that robots need to be implemented so that they can quickly produce items at low cost, but in countries where human resources are abundant why make human resource useless at the expense of implementing robotic technology advancements. Such technologies use greater electrical resources. Resources which in recent times attract a growing fee. The tradeoff may not in the long run prove so efficient.
Consider for instance when we began using AI as customer service instruments. It was initially thought, that AI chat bots would substitute all our customer service agents, however companies soon realised that there’s only so much that the AI bots could deal with. There’s only so much they could empathise with peoples problems. This resulted in more serious issues being escalated to human customer service agents who were able to deal with all the different nuances of a situation. That makes sense.
Redundant human beings may become resentful. This in turn could lead to an uprising. If I can see this why is it the people
In positions of leadership are not thinking this through better. Or maybe they have a better plan?
Yes! AI does things and wonderful things but it does not mean that we need to hands up and hand over our senses. Policy makers at all levels need to be more thoughtful. They need to be more creative in the way they develop technology implementation policies. They need to develop and implement policies that both complement the human being and utilise the technology advancement effectively.
Maybe I’m ranting and maybe I’m alone in thinking this. It’s just a thought which I am sharing because we’re on a platform called LinkedIn. On this platform we humans, me, you and everybody else are looking for job opportunities, business opportunities and ways to work, live and play.
If AI or other technologies are going to make us redundant, and all we are doing is waving our hands in the air like we just don’t care, or can’t do anything about it, then what are we doing here? I’ll leave you with that thought. If you can give me an answer I would be happy to hear it.
Let’s innovate, learn, and grow together.
Bye for now.
